Case Study

“The contract was carried out well within the original programme parameters to a safe and tidy standard. I would have no hesitation in recommending you to any other company within the Group.”

Steve Harrison, Building Director, Berkeley Homes

Lucy’s Foundry, Oxford

Berkeley Homes (Oxford and Chiltern) needed to demolish W. Lucy & Co – Eagle Works, known as Lucy’s Foundry, to prepare the site for a multi-million pound residential property development.

Wooldridge has worked with the Berkeley Group for over 20 years and is a competitive provider of demolition services.

The work in central Oxford involved demolishing a Victorian foundry. Cast iron columns and beams over four storeys made incremental demolition especially challenging but using specialist skills, Wooldridge safely demolished all buildings, basements, foundations, external hard-standing and a Victorian cast-iron bridge structure that spanned the Oxford Canal. It removed all asbestos-based materials, levelled and cleared the entire area.

Adding to the complexity of the project, the main public Oxford sewer ran through the site two metres below ground level and the area was surrounded by residential properties, a Victorian cemetery, and the Oxford Canal. To support and protect the environment, Wooldridge erected extensive protection scaffold to ensure there was no damage, undue noise or dust pollution.

The demolition was completed on time and on budget with 100% of all the concrete, brick and steel recycled.
